Barack Obama said the decade since the attacks of Sept. 11 shows that America does not give in to fear, and never succumbed to the suspicion and mistrust.
“These past 10 years, tell a story of resistance,” the president said after a long day of remembrance and reflection that led to the three sites where hijacked planes hit that day fear.
Speaking at a memorial concert Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the president spoke of the past to remember and honor the sacrifices, who died in the attacks, and two long wars spawned.
But we also wanted a future in which 9 / 11 will be seen through the eyes of the generations who have never witnessed the same attacks, and instead learn through memorials.
For them, the president said, the legacy of 9 / 11 will be the soldiers who signed up to serve citizens who resisted the fear that the workers who built new towers to replace the old and children who parents lived their dreams.
“You will recall that we have overcome slavery and civil war, the bread lines and fascism, the recession and the riots, communism, and yes, terrorism,” Obama said.
“It ‘been said that we are, I think we took a painful blow, and become stronger.”
